Leadership: We all have the Power to Lead from Within

On Thursday June 30th BOOM! sent everyone into the long weekend with something to reflect on… What makes a good Leader.

Quarterly, BOOM! holds Book Banter, a personal & team development initiative, where the team comes together to discuss something we’ve read – a book, a blog, a quote – and reflect on it as a group. This initiative started when BOOM! was no more than a handful of office staff as a means to frugally foster growth and development. Now, with sessions of Book Banter that see more than 35 people, it continues to feed people’s zeal for learning and promotes motivation and empowerment amongst the team.

Today’s theme was ‘Leadership from Within’. What motivates us? Who do we think is a good leader? What traits define a good leader? We all brought in a quote on a page, and then came prepared to discuss the three qualities we personally believe a leader should possess.

People gathered in the kitchen, the heart of our home in the office, and taped their quotes to the wall. The team was welcomed with a delightful breakfast and when people were fed and settled, we began our discussion.

We started by selecting a quote to start with. Once it was read, the person who posted it explained how it embodied leadership to them and shared their three traits, which were recorded for all to see. We carried on in the same fashion until all quotes were read, personal ideas were shared, and list of leadership traits was compiled.

From sports figures, to world leaders; famed authors to Hip-Hop moguls, all quotes were interesting and relevant. More important, it help us learn more about our peers and what motivated one another and provided added inspiration and renewed perspective.

Ultimately, it’s fair to say the resounding message was that the senior leadership at BOOM! allows us to become the leaders we aspire to become through guidance, encouragement and freedom. While we have no official titles at BOOM!, Meghan Fox in Casting cleverly said, “Even if you’re the lowest wrung on the ladder, the top people are accessible and that’s encouraging and motivating; and experience many wouldn’t get anywhere else.”

Our header image was the final collage that was made with all the terrific quotes. This will serve to remind us of the leaders that inspire us to do the work we do, and be the kind of leaders we need to be.
