QR Codes in Experiential Marketing

We have all seen those tiny black and white squares that are pixilated on posters in the subway, on packaged goods and magazine covers. These are known as QR Codes, or Quick Response Codes. These codes are able to bring people to microsites, register them for news updates or even to view online videos. Our partners at Campbell’s do their part each year to help the Canadian National Food Bank increase their level of assistance to the public through the ‘Help Hunger Disappear’ campaign. The campaign begins each year after ‘National Hunger Awareness Day’ on June 1st, and continues to raise awareness about the issue and grow donations of food and money to the Canadian National Food Bank.

It wasn't until a friend of mine, Bryan, who had been working at the Whaleshark Oceanic Research Centre told me about an impoverished neighborhood called Camponado, a few hundred meters from Main Street that I became aware of the alternate reality of the island. Due to time constraints, I had to leave Utila, but flash forward two years later. I pitched the idea of researching the barrio to my MFA thesis advisors at Ryerson University in Toronto, and got on a plane this past November to spend two and a half months on the island.
